ANALYZING SYSTEMS OF GATEKEEPING

DECONSTRUCTING THOSE SYSTEMS

BUILDING AFFIRMING ENVIRONMENTS

BaBEC develops and implements initiatives and activities to promote Black and transgender equity as well as a sense of belonging among LGBTQ+ Black people and all people of color in Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines, and surrounding areas. We will do this by building coalition with value-aligned people, businesses, and organizations on and off-island.

Conscious & Unconscious Bias

It exists everywhere. Even in our queer little utopias of Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove.

ESPECIALLY in our queer little utopias!

  • How do we face it?

  • How do we learn from it?

  • How do we overcome it?

ANTIRACIST EDUCATION

We want BIPOC and trans people to step off of the ferry and into a community that is doing the work make Fire Island truly inclusive. BaBEC encourages active anti-racism practices within the community and will be inviting organizations and businesses in Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines to participate in diversity, equity and inclusion training with us.

HEALING JUSTICE

Often when we think of the work to undo exclusionary systems, we don’t include what it looks like to center Black and transgender joy. BaBEC creates uplifting and entertaining events that centers Black and transgender joy, relaxation, healing and connecting to indigenous land.

ACCESSIBILITY

Fire Island is a difficult system to navigate if you don’t know how everything works. Also, transportation and accommodations are expensive.

Our organization has been working on ways to level the playing field. Anything is possible when we work together.
